The New Xbox One Experience (NXE), as it is styled, is expected to be a significant download ("because there is a vast breadth of refreshed content available, it will be larger than previous Xbox One system updates" Microsoft informed WIRED).But it's also delivering a number of new features and concepts that will potentially transform how the console looks, and how it works. Doing so should be pretty simple -- it's possible that your Xbox One will download it automatically, depending on your Instant-On settings, and that it will install when you try to login.According to the current head of Microsoft's Xbox division, Phil Spencer, "The importance of entertainment and games to the Windows ecosystem has become really prevalent to the company".Starting in February 2014, Microsoft invited select users to join a preview program that enables them to receive early builds of upcoming system updates and experiment with the features prior to the public launch of the software.It allowed users to snap apps and take screenshots, but not much else.The NXOE Guide on the other hand incorporates much of the Xbox 360's Guide menu functionality.
In practice that will lead to more and better apps for the Xbox, though whether or not developers will take the opportunity to make more than a limited selection of video apps (with games covered elsewhere on the system) remains to be seen.
Included in the release was the ability to play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, redesigned Home, new community section to make Xbox One more social, revamped One Guide, optimized store and much more.
Background music playback has long been one of the highest requested Xbox One features on User Voice, but it looks like users will be waiting a few months longer before getting their hands (ears? I hooked up my cable to the Xbox, but the picture quality wasn't very good, and it was slow to change channels. I do use the One for the apps, Groove, and a few games. The Shared Partition contained the Windows 8 Core at launch until November 2015, where via a system update known as the "New Xbox One Experience", it was upgraded to the Windows 10 Core.
With Windows 10, Universal Windows Platform apps became available on Xbox One.
